First, we need to define an autoresponder series.

An autoresponder series is simply a series of marketing emails sent over a scheduled period of time with the intent on selling a product or service.

This series of emails are referred to as “autoresponder” series simply because of the mechanism that is used to send the emails-an email robot or autoresponder.

Autoresponders are able to send a series of emails on a set schedule – like every other day – without further input from the sender. These scripts have revolutionized email marketing and every internet marketer uses such a service – or at least should be using such a service.

Now there are several reasons why you should use an autoresponder series, the most important of which are:

1. Marketing tests have shown that prospects are more likely to make a purchase the more they are exposed to an advertisement. An autoresponder series allows you to contact the subscriber several times as against a single visit to your website and thus increases the likelihood of making the sale. 3. By its very nature an email is more personal to a prospect than reading a sales letter on a website. The subscriber’s inbox is regarded as a personal space and any message there is perceived as more personal than when read from a website.

4. An autoresponder series can build a relationship with the prospect over time which a ‘one shot’ sales letter cannot accomplish. As the prospect continues to receive emails from you, the repeated contacts say you’re concerned about them receiving the benefits from your product or service.

5. You are able to offer ‘bite-size’ information for those prospects who find it tedious to read through a 25-page long sales letter on one sitting. The series of emails also allows you to try different persuasion techniques to target different types of prospects.

6. Only a 20-30% of your subscribers will open your email the first time it goes out, so follow up becomes even more important.

As a copywriter, I find that when I write the landing page, main sales letter and autoresponder for my clients, the increase in sales more than compensates for the extra investment they made in having me write the autoresponder series. For many people, their first experience of working online involves selling products on eBay. This was how I got started back in 1998 and I know countless other people that have done the same.

However, it is important to remember that eBay is not the ‘be all and end all’ – there is a much bigger online world out there. My reason for mentioning this is that I have spoken to three people this week who each make a decent full or part-time income on eBay but who are fed up with it and looking to move in other directions.

Having sold on eBay myself, I can understand why sellers do get tired/bored/frustrated with the auction site – it is highly competitive and it takes an incredible amount of hard work to succeed. In addition, it is normally the case that the more successful you become, the harder you have to work. Listing auctions, handling customer enquiries, packing, shipping, sourcing/buying stock, keeping up with feedback, monitoring the competition – selling on eBay is a tough job and it is no wonder that after working in this way for a few years, many people wish they were back in the land of the employed!!

Don’t get me wrong, there is good money to be made on eBay for anyone willing to put the effort in and many people enjoy trading on this huge auction site. But it isn’t for everyone.

Having spoken to numerous eBay sellers in the past, it seems to me that of the ones that don’t enjoy working on eBay, the particular task that they enjoy the least is the packing and shipping of products. Funnily enough, this is exactly the bit of trading that I grew to dislike too.

I (and the sellers I have spoken to) didn’t have a problem with creating sales descriptions, dealing with emails, collecting payment (naturally!) and the other administrative tasks involved in running an online business. But wrapping things up and taking them to the post office is something completely different and for me and many others that’s where it all started to fall apart :-)

As I said at the beginning of this article, if you are getting fed up of doing the eBay ‘thing’ or if you just don’t fancy the idea to start with, there is a wealth of alternative opportunities available online. My own solution was to get rid of the one aspect of eBay trading that I didn’t enjoy – the packing and shipping – and start to produce and sell digital products which could be delivered to the customer automatically. I still have to write sales pages and build websites, I still have to deal with emails etc but I don’t have to handle any physical products (neither do I have to deal with payment collection because that too can be handled automatically by software).

Of course my products are very relevant to eBay sellers and indeed, there are numerous individuals and companies out there that have made a fortune off the back of eBay without ever having sold a single product on the auction site. I am sure that there are numerous other problems that eBay users have that could be solved with a new piece of software or a particular service and if the idea takes off, there are 135 million registered users on eBay to market to!

eBay provides a wonderful opportunity for hundreds of thousands of people but it isn’t for everyone and if you find yourself frustrated/bored with the same old routine everyday, start to look for something outside of the eBay world.

When someone wins your auction, you might think that’s the end of it. In fact, you can offer the item to anyone else who bid in the auction but didn’t win.

Why Would I Do That?

There are three reasons you might want to do this:

1. Your top bidder never paid. Unfortunately for sellers, it is all too common for buyers to win an item and then decide they don’t want it after all. Making a second chance offer lets you offer the item to a buyer with a better reputation.

2. You have another one. If you have another item just like the one you just sold then you might as well sell it to another bidder – after all, you know they’re interested and what they’re willing to pay.

3. A buyer emails you directly to ask. If they got ‘sniped’ at the last second, or just weren’t around when the auction ended, then a buyer might email you to ask if you’ll sell them one for however many dollars. You might as well make them an offer – it’s a free sale.

So How Do You Make a Second Chance Offer?

Well, it’s easy really. The easiest place to send a second chance offer from is the My eBay screen – simply go to the Selling page and click ‘Make a Second Chance Offer’. eBay should also provide a link for you to make a second chance offer in the email you will receive after the sale of an item is completed, or you report a non-paying buyer.

What Happens Next?

The buyer can choose to either accept or reject your offer. If they decline, that’s the end of it, and you pay nothing for making the offer. If they accept, then things work exactly the same way they would if they’d won the auction – you pay a final value fee, they pay you, and you can leave feedback for each other as normal.

Making a second chance offer on all your auctions can be a great way to make extra sales. You will probably find that about 50% of the buyers you make offers to will take them up, and you save the effort of relisting the item and paying another insertion fee.

The only disadvantage is the time that it might take you to send so many second chance offers, but the chances are it will be time well spent. If you find that it doesn’t work for your particular kind of items, though, don’t keep pushing it – just re-list the item and let people bid again. It might be that the buyers for your items just aren’t the negotiating type – or perhaps they hope that the next one will sell for less.

So your buyer has paid on time, you’ve shipped them the item, and they’ve left you positive feedback. Everything is going great! You know that leaving your buyer some nice feedback will finish everything off, and make them glad they chose to buy from you.

When you see that little feedback box, though, you might find that you have no idea what to write to make your buyer happiest. Well, here’s a guide.

Don’t write “A++++++++”. Once upon a time, leaving grades on eBay buyers actually meant something. Now, though, writing an ‘A’ and filling the rest of the space with pluses seems to have become a common way of saying ‘good’. The meaning of the grades is gone entirely – no one ever leaves a B-, after all – so it’s a pretty useless thing to write. Try something more descriptive.

‘Prompt/fast/instant payment’. Did the buyer get on PayPal within hours or even minutes of winning the auction and pay you as quickly as they could? If they did, then your comment should include the words ‘prompt payment’. This is a big thing for buyers, as other sellers will really prefer to deal with someone they know will pay on time.

‘Great communication’. If you found the buyer was very responsive to all your emails, then point this out. It’s especially worth putting this if there was a problem that you had to overcome, and the buyer was co-operative and easy to work with.

‘A pleasure to deal with’. If this was one of those very easy transactions where nothing went wrong, then you should put that the buyer was a pleasure to deal with, or ‘the way ebay should be’, or just a ‘great ebayer’.

‘Great as always’. When it’s the second or third time that the buyer has bought from you, make sure to point it out. The fact that they go back to the same seller more than once and build up a relationship is a good thing for them to have on their record.

The Main Rule: Praise to the Skies.

Think of anything good you have to say and try to fit as much of it as you can in that limited space. Don’t worry too much about punctuation. Here’s a good example comment: “Instant payment, great communication – excellent buyer!”.

As a side effect, this then gives you the power to leave slightly negative feedback for some buyers without actually having to make it negative, like this: “Paid quite quickly, communication fine”. Making very short, to-the-point comments also reflects badly on the buyer: if you just write “OK”, it means “I really wanted to leave a neutral or a negative”. Don’t do this if that’s not the meaning you intend.

Don’t spend too much time agonising over what to write in your feedback comments, though – the chances are you’ll be leaving hundreds every week. You might find it worthwhile to come up with a few standard ones for different situations, and use eBay’s Selling Manager to leave feedback in bulk.

Of course, before you can leave your buyer any feedback, you need to make sure they’ve paid you. Luckily getting your buyer to pay is easy, as eBay handle most of it for you. In the next email, we’ll take a tour of eBay’s checkout.

The auto-responder note was short, pointed and just what I wanted to read. In fact, I thought the email was a representation of the near perfect auto-responder message.

Let me break down the elements that make an auto-responder message successful.

1) Order Tracking. The section provides the order number for easy referral if there is a problem with the order. Customers can use this number when contacting the company with any customer service question.

2) A Statement of Intent. This section clearly defines how many emails the recipient will receive to guide them through the product fulfillment process. In the case of this sample that number is three. This number is fairly standard for auto-responder emails.

a) Order Confirmation. This email assures you that the company received your order.

b) Order Status. This email indicates that the order is in process and provides an itemized list of purchases and applicable discounts along with shipping related costs

c) Order Shipped. This email is sent when the product fulfillment team delivers the package for delivery. This generally includes tracking numbers and business contact information should the package be delayed lost or arrived damaged.

At this point the auto-responder notice encourages recipients to white list their emails so future information isn’t sent to the spam folder.

Finally the auto-responder message includes a closing note from the customer services department head. In this case there is a statement listed that reads, “My only job is making you happy.”

In all the auto-responder message was shorter than the above description. No graphics were included, but the message was caught and digested quickly.

It may be to your advantage to make your auto-responder messages short and without undue marketing statements. After all the reason for the auto-responder is to manage a customer’s order once the purchase is actually complete. To go overboard in marketing might be viewed as overkill.

Auto-responders should be designed to assist both the online business owner and the customer. This happens when pertinent information is delivered on a timely basis.

Customers appreciate knowing the status of their order and a three-pronged approach to information delivery can happen in a virtually hands-free environment known as auto-responder.

Does your auto-responder have to look exactly like the sample outline above? No. You devise it any way you want. I simply used this outline to demonstrate one very succinct way to allow your customers to know what to expect, when to expect it and that you will not be sending long-term emails to them without their permission.

I might suggest that if you want to include a marketing angle make that appeal on your last auto-responder email. This email can provide tracking information, but it can also alert customers to ezines or free email services you may offer that may be knowledge-based and desirable. Make sure this is offered as an opt-in function and don’t high-pressure these individuals who have already extended their trust in making a purchase.

Auto-responders can be the first line of defense when it comes to providing proactive customer service.

3.Quick or not? Can you answer in a few sentences? Do so right away. Even if you can’t fully answer, a quick response will show you are available and on top of things. Will it take longer to respond? Label it “unread” and mark it down on your to-do list.

4.Just information? Is the email just some stuff you need to read? Mark it on your to-do list or create a “Read” folder for later review. If you have a lot of these, create 2 folders “Read today” and “Read.”

5.Resist the urge to check obsessively . Check email first thing in the morning for important messages. If you have no pressing task to work on, go through the above steps. If you have something else that needs immediate attention, ignore the emails except for the urgent ones. Set aside certain hours during the day when you check email – or check it on the hour if you feel the need. But don’t constantly flip back and forth between email and your work.

6.Bonus tip! Rather than emailing, call the person, go see the person or schedule a quick meeting.

Not to long ago I went to log in to my web hosting account and was told that both my user name and password were wrong.

Well, we’ve all been there especially when you buy hosting, I mean these days my password file is bigger than my little black book was when I was single.

Hey, it’s the truth we are all totally caught up in our super fast paced digital age. Don’t even try and tell me that you’ve never woke up at 3am to go to the bathroom and snuck over to check your emails before you crawled back in bed.

And having another password is just part of the drill when you get web hsosting. So, anyway after 5 or 6 log in attempts I copied and pasted it straitdirectly out of my password file and I got back an error message that read: A problem exists between the keyboard and the chair, please remove problem.

And while I kinda like to buy hosting company’s with a sense of humor I was not in the mood after 5 or 6 failed attempts. This mind you was not the first challenge I had with this same web host, actually it was turning into a naughty child list longer than even Santa’s.

On one such occasion I had called in because my site had crashed for the 2nd time in one month only to be put on hold with a recording about how they were number one in the industry for up time (no Joke!).

Hey, I agree we are all human, everybody blows it on occasion. My wife still won’t ever let me forget when she asked me to pick up mini pads on the way home from work and I showed up with a wrist rest for her mouse. But this hosting company had really crossed the line a few to many times.

I am sure you would agree that migrating 3 websites from one host to another is not something you would just do on a whim. Because before you even begin, you just know this is going to be pretty painful.

So, I wake up on a Saturday thinking I should have all this over with by noon, and by which time it will be 5 o’clock somewhere and very cold beverages will definitely be the order of business. Oh man was I ever wrong about that one. Sure it was 5 o’clock somewhere but ice cold frosty’s were still several hours away.

1st of all when I called the help desk I was told that I was not the administrator on my own account. That should have been my first clue this was going to be a really long day. Because get this, if you’re not the administrator they won’t tell you who is, and so the merry go round ensued.

Finally he got his stupidvisor on the horn and it was easy to tell he was one of those guys that spend over 75% of their time on a plane with their laptop ON their lap and their child IN the overhead compartment. But He was able to figure out that I truly was the right guy for my accounts, so I will give him that.

Then they put my cancelation through before I had my sites moved, even though I had not yet officially asked for them to be canceled the guy started the process anyway. This meant according to them, now I was attempting to move sites that didn’t exist. Yes, you guessed it, once again I was no longer the administrator because now there was nothing to stinkin administrate!

Once we got that settled then the constant credit card charges for three more months AFTER the account really was closed. AND after they had not let me be the administrator for my own accounts again which they closed too early were just the icing on the cake.

The moral of the story is when you buy web hosting from new little start up website companies that promise you the world for a buck a month cheaper than anyone else have to cut corners somewhere.

Take it from me this pleasurable experience is running up a spending tab just like my last marriage. How much is that you might ask? The truth is; I don’t know I’m still paying for it!

If you engage in any form of Email Marketing you probably read the same things that I do about it all:

Email Marketing is completely ineffective.

Safelist Marketing is futile.

Email Ad Blasters are a scam.

And yet I know of several Internet Marketers that continue to make their livings almost completely from the sales that they generate from these specific sources.

So who is right?!

Actually, both are!

In spite of the fact that a central group of Internet Marketers build their businesses this way, this fact remains:

The vast majority of people using any form of Email based marketing never even get their emails opened!

The reason is as simple as it is maddening…

Their Subject Line isn’t doing it’s job!

Ok, so the question now is simple to identify. What is the function of the Headline?

Fortunately it is just as easily answered.

The only thing the Subject Line needs to do is get the recipient to open that email! If the recipient opens the email, then the Subject Line has completed it’s task!

Writing an effective Headline requires that you center your efforts on just this one aspect. If the Headline does not compel the prospect then it has failed…

To accomplish this, you should rarely if ever use the prewritten Subject Lines provided by the programs or products that you are promoting. These end up being so overused that most of your recipients will just pass them over.

Your Subject Line should jump out at the reader and tell them not just what your content is about, but it should let the reader know that if they DON’t read your email, they will miss out on something they cannot get anywhere else!

It is no secret in the IM community when a major launch occurs. Most of us are so inundated with emails about the newest/best/greatest service or software title since sliced bread that we are relieved when it is over. But ask yourself: Which of these emails do you end up opening?

Invariably it will be the one that approaches the subject from a different angle. You will get at least a dozen with IDENTICAL Subject Lines. You may open one of these, but not likely more than that…

You will need to study the product or service that you are promoting and look for a feature that is both important and overlooked in the provided marketing materials. This is usually easier than it sounds. It is best if this is something that solves a problem that you are aware of, or even have struggled with yourself.

Explosive headlines work well too. Exploit a perceived controversy, or create one. A very successful technique is to state that the products and services being marketed “Is Guaranteed Legal” or other copy designed to make it sound radically different than anything else available.

Get the prospect to feel that they will be missing something if they don’t read your email and it will get opened.

The next step is getting the prospect to clickone of the links inside. But that is the job of your sales copy.
